Viron Erol Vert war im Rahmen des internationalen, von der Josef und Hilde Wilberz-Stiftung unterstützen Atelierstipendiums 2022 Stipendiat der Stadt Mönchengladbach. Als Abschlussarbeit hat er die Aufenthaltsskulptur Flexible Color Circle_II spezifisch für den Innenhof des historischen Rathaus Abtei entwickelt. Die Arbeit ist für ein Jahr im Innenhof des Rathaus Abtei zu sehen. Sie wird sich allerdings im Laufe der Ausstellungszeit verändern: Angelehnt an den Jahreszyklus wird die Skulptur viermal neu arrangiert und erhält zu jeder Jahreszeit eine jeweils andere Form. 

Der Arbeit vorausgegangen ist eine intensive Auseinandersetzung des Künstlers mit der Stadt, ihren soziokulturellen Strukturen, vielschichtigen Traditionen und ihrer wechselhaften Geschichte. Diese Langzeitbeobachtungen, aber auch Verts multikulturelle Sozialisierung und seine von Joseph Beuys Idee der sozialen Plastik beeinflusste künstlerische Praxis fließen in die Skulptur ein. Inspiration für Flexible Color Circle_II sind die verschiedenen Perspektiven der Stadtgesellschaft, ihre Verbindungen, aber auch die Unterschiedlichkeiten sowie historischen Zerwürfnisse und deren geschichtlicher Rahmen – von den Anfängen der Siedlungsgeschichte Mönchengladbachs und Bildung der Stadtteile, von der Industrialisierungsphase und Stoffproduktion über die Tradition der Karnevalskultur bis zu den Entwicklungen der Gegenwart. 

Der Ausgangspunkt der nutzbaren Aufenthaltsskulptur ist eine kreisförmige geometrische Grundform – eine Formensprache, die die Stadt auf den ersten Blick als geschlossene Gemeinschaft versteht. Die von außen zunächst schwer erkennbaren Regeln, Traditionen und Kommunikationsformen sind jedoch beim näheren Betrachten an bestimmten Stellen offen und durchlässig und in der Skulptur metaphorisch als Durchgänge und Teilungen dargestellt. Die beiden gegenüberliegenden Komplementärfarben symbolisieren die unterschiedlichen Sichtweisen, die Verschiedenheiten der Stadt und die politischen, religiösen, multikulturellen und migrantischen Positionen ihrer Bewohner*innen. Das Modul mit der dritten Farbe versinnbildlicht den Aufbruch und den Zündungsmoment in dem die Stadt sich grundsätzlich befindet. 

Die unterschiedlichen Sitz- und Blickrichtungen, die die Besucher*innen ein- nehmen können, laden dazu ein, sich selbst, die Skulptur und den sich ständig in Bewegung befindlichen herausfordernden Raum- und Zeit-Moment neu zu begreifen und wahrzunehmen. Die Veränderung der Skulptur kann als Ant- wort auf die bewegenden Momente der letzten Jahre gesehen werden. Die ortsspezifische Installation symbolisiert eine Gesellschaft zwischen Stillstand und Bewegung, zwischen Tradition und Fortschritt. Durch die Neuverbindung der Module entsteht eine teils fließende, wellenartige Formensprache, die sich metaphorisch mit dem in der Nähe einst fließenden Fluss und Namensgeber der Stadt und den unzähligen Leinenstoffbahnen, die an dessen Ufern einst gebleicht wurden, verbindet und den Blick in Richtung neuer Ufer und einer perspektivreichen Zukunft richtet.



In 2022 Viron Erol Vert was the recipient of the city of Mönchengladbach‘s international studio scholarship, supported by Josef and Hilde Wilberz-Stiftung. For his final project marking the end of his residency, the artist designed the seating sculpture Flexible Color Circle_II especially for the courtyard of the historic Rathaus Abtei. The work will be on display there for a year, but it will change over the duration of the exhibition period: inspired by the rhythms of the year, the sculpture will be rearranged four times, assuming a different form each season.

The work is the culmination of Vert’s extensive exploration of the city, its sociocultural structures, complex traditions, and eventful history. The sculpture incorporates these long-term observations, but also the artist’s multicultural upbringing and his artistic practice, which is influenced by Joseph Beuys’s idea of social sculpture. 

The inspiration for Flexible Color Circle_II comes from the different perspec- tives of the city’s community, their connections, but also their diversity, as well as past conflicts and their historical frameworks—from the beginnings of Mönchengladbach as a settlement to the formation of its different neighbor- hoods, from the industrial period and textile manufacturing to the traditions of carnival culture and contemporary developments. 

The interactive seating sculpture is based on a simple circular geometric shape—at first glance, this formal vocabulary presents the city as a closed community. Upon closer inspection, however, the rules, traditions, and modes of communication that initially seem difficult to identify from the outside are in fact open and permeable at certain points, which is represented in the sculpture by thoroughfares and divisions. The complementary colors opposite each other symbolize different points of view and the diversity of the city, as well as the various political, religious, multicultural and migrant perspectives of its inhabitants. The module with the third color embodies new beginnings and the current dynamic momentum of the city in general. Visitors can choose different seating and viewing directions, which invite them to find new ways of understanding and perceiving themselves, the sculpture, and the challenge of this ever-changing moment in space and time. The transformation of the sculpture can be interpreted as a response to the turbulence of the last few years. The site-specific installation represents a society that is situated somewhere between stasis and movement, between tradition and progress. Rearranging the modules creates a kind of flowing, undulating formal vocabulary, which can be metaphorically lin- ked to the river that once flowed nearby and gave its name to the city, as well as to the countless lengths of linen cloth that were once bleached on its banks, directing our gaze towards new shores and a future that is rich in perspectives.
