Bei der Buchpräsentation im Depo in Istanbul werden der Künstler Viron Erol Vert und die Herausgeberinnen Kristina Kramer und Didem Yazıcı über die Entstehung des Buches und seine Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Ausstellungsprozess sprechen. Die Veranstaltung beginnt mit einem Videoscreening, gefolgt von einem Gespräch und einer Kritik von Autorin und Lektorin von Fisun Yalçınkaya, die in eine Q&A endet.

Die Publikation „Family Matters, Conversations about Old Spirits, the Question of Belonging, and Complementary Spaces“ des deutsch-türkisch-griechischen Künstlers und Tarabya-Alumnus Viron Erol Vert dokumentiert erstmals einen Querschnitt seiner Arbeiten, die in den letzten zwölf Jahren zwischen den Metropolen Berlin, Istanbul und Athen entstanden sind. Grundsätzlich vom Zustand und der Atmosphäre des Dazwischen-Seins geprägt, verweben sich in Verts künstlerischer Praxis Verbindungs- und Reibungspunkte verschiedener Kulturen, Materialien, Sprachen, Ausdrucksformen, Sichtweisen und Lebensauffassungen zu einer hybriden Identität.

In raumgreifenden Installationen, Skulpturen und bildnerischen Arbeiten hinterfragt Vert die Konstruktion von Identität in Bezug zu materieller Kultur, zu Readymade und Objekt in der Kunst ebenso wie zu Themen der Zugehörigkeit in einer post-globalisierten multikulturellen Gesellschaft. Unter Bezug auf historische und zeitgenössische sozio-politische Entwicklungen zeigt er im Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Orient und Okzident, Technologie und Religion, Physik und Esoterik sowie Logos und Mythos variationsreiche Sichtweisen auf das Eigene und das Fremde vor dem Hintergrund kultureller Vormachtstellung als Folgen von Identitätspolitik.

Ausgehend von Verts persönlicher multi-kultureller Prägung und seiner eigenen Familiengeschichte verbindet das Buch in drei umfassenden Kapiteln Fragen zu urbaner Kultur und verschiedenen Wechselwirkungen von ursprünglicher Herkunft und Sozialisierung in diversen kosmopolitischen, queeren Lebensformen und sub-kulturellen Kontexten wie der Clubszene Berlins.

In the book launch at Depo in İstanbul, artist Viron Erol Vert and editors Kristina Kramer and Didem Yazıcı will discuss the making of the book and its similarities to the exhibition making process. The event will begin with a video screening, continue with a conversation and end with a respond by writer and editor Fisun Yalçınkaya, followed by Q&A.

The publication „Family Matters: Conversations about Old Spirits, the Question of Belonging, and Complementary Spaces“ by German-Turkish-Greek artist and Tarabya alumnus Viron Erol Vert documents for the first time a cross-section of his works that have been created over the past twelve years between the metropolises of Berlin, Istanbul, and Athens. Fundamentally shaped by the condition and atmosphere of being in-between, Vert's artistic practice interweaves points of connection and friction between different cultures, materials, languages, forms of expression and ways of seeing to create a hybrid identity.

In immersive installations, sculptures, and visual works, Vert questions the construction of identity in relation to material culture, the readymade and art object, as well as issues of belonging in a post-globalized multicultural society. With reference to historical and contemporary socio-political developments, and in the interaction between Orient and Occident, technology and religion, physics and esotericism, and logos and myth, he demonstrates a variety of concepts of the self and the other against the backdrop of cultural supremacy as a consequence of identity politics.

Based on Vert's personal multicultural background and his own family history, the book combines in three comprehensive chapters questions about urban culture and intersections of ancestry and socialization in diverse cosmopolitan and queer lifestyles and subcultural contexts such as Berlin's club scene.
