Joan Jonas
27.07.2024 - 01.09.2024
Who’s afraid of naked people, huge skeletons and enormous snakes? The summer break is the perfect time to discover what goes on behind the closed doors of our gallery, while you think we’re at the beach. We’re excited to introduce you to a treasure trove of rarely seen, scary performance drawings by legendary pioneer of performance art Joan Jonas (*1936), created while she was a full Professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart (from 1994). The wall size drawings were drawn during in Circular Revision Video Performance in conjunction with her retrospective at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Joan Jonas: Performance, Video, Installation 1968-2000. Jonas’ use of live drawings treating themes such as myth, life, death and the body created a dynamic interplay between performer and the audience and make them survivors of performances and moments long gone. We invite you to "step into the pictures" chosen for this virtual exhibition project and the world in which they live – behind closed doors (text: Elisabeth Hauff).
